About the project

A massive expansion of immigration detention. Termination of protected status for hundreds of thousands of people. Student visas canceled. Noncriminal immigrants taken from their families.

Throughout his campaign for a second term, President Donald Trump vowed to implement “the largest deportation operation in the history of our country” and take other measures aimed at immigrants in the U.S. On Inauguration Day, that campaign began. “Upheaval Across America” examines the vast ramifications of the administration’s policies – on migrants themselves but also their families and employers and communities big and small all across the land.

This summer, 21 journalists from 10 universities across the U.S. gathered at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication to investigate immigration enforcement in the United States under the second Trump era.

They traveled to over 30 cities in 10 states and across the border into Mexico to report. The final project – in text, video, photos and graphics – is available to media outlets for publication at no cost.
